Why did we develop MMA Flash Cards?

Hi! I’m Jon Zorn,

I am a student who is trying to learn this stuff, just like you.

I don’t mind losing fights. That’s part of the learning process. But I hate not doing my best.

When I started training in combat sports, I saw that everyone was facing the same problems. It seemed like techniques were being thrown at us randomly with very little systematic review. There was a sense of frustration. Some of my friends had even quit.

So, I decided to apply my training in learning optimization to the problem. Implementing a spaced repetition system seemed like a promising solution.

A group of us at open gym started using flashcards to organize our learning and reviews. The forgetting and frustration disappeared and sparing became a lot more fun.

The spaced repetition system worked!

Now you can use a full-featured, video version of this brutally effective learning tool, designed by MMA experts. Check it out for free in the app stores.

Hello, we are Anthony Frank and Amanda Brown Tortorici, PhD

We have been competing in combat sports for years. At Grappler’s Studio in Laguna Hills, California, we coach students ranging from children to adult champions. So, we know how difficult it is to optimize classes for every student.

MMA Flash Cards are a great tool for solving this problem. Students can use them to learn on their own, and teachers can use them as a warmup activity, giving each student the opportunity to address his or her individual needs.

Try MMA Flash Cards for yourself. You can test it for a week without having to provide your credit card info. I think you will like the results.

    Frequently asked questions

    1. You learn MMA in the gym. How is an app going to help me?

We don’t expect anyone to become a world champion by looking at an app in their recliner. MMA Flash Cards is a tool to help you optimize your time in the gym. By using the Mental Practice deck at home, you will know exactly what your goals are in the cage. By using the Physical Practice deck at the gym with a partner, you will systematically build the skills you need to succeed.

    2. I already watch MMA videos. How is this app different?

Watching videos is a passive activity. Most of what we watch is soon forgotten. Learning is achieved through active recall and deliberate practice. MMA Flash Cards provides both.

    3. I take MMA classes. Why do I need an app?

MMA Flash Cards will help you get the most out of your MMA classes. If you are learning MMA in a group setting, it is unlikely that the class is optimized to meet your individual needs. MMA Flash Cards is designed to systematically build your skills from the ground up.

    4. How many techniques will I learn using MMA Flash Cards?

We are launching with 100 techniques but plan to add more.

    5. How much do I need to use MMA Flash Cards?

We recommend that you don’t overdo it. There is more risk of taking on too much and quitting than there is of not taking on enough and falling short. For most people ten to fifteen minutes of mental practice every day is a good pace. Do physical practice with a partner for a few minutes before or after class, or spend an hour whenever you can go to open gym.

A little bit of deliberate practice, done consistently, will go a long way.

    6. I don’t have anyone to practice with. Can I still benefit?

Assuming you are involved in an MMA class, you will benefit from practicing in Mental Mode, even if you don’t have a partner to practice in Physical Mode with. The benefits of mental practice are well-established and used at the Olympic champion level.

The important thing is to make a complete image of what the technique entails, from your toes to your fingers to the top of your head. You should not be quizzing yourself on what a technique “looks like” but rather envisioning every detail.

    7. What is spaced repetition and how does it improve learning?

Spaced repetition is a memory technique that involves reviewing and recalling information and skills at optimal spacing intervals until the information is learned at a sufficient level. This technique helps your brain remember more information as it keeps the material fresh in your mind and forces you to use active recall.

    8. I rely on my go-to moves. Why should I learn all of this?

You should definitely develop your go-to moves to the highest levels. But the best-laid plans can go astray. To become a well-rounded fighter, your long-term strategy should be to gradually increase your great moves, good moves, and okay moves.
